브라이언 메이(Brian May)의 콜래보레이션 살펴보기

 

퀸(Queen)의 브라이언 메이(Brian May)는 솔로 활동보다 콜래보레이션이 더 돋보였다. 지금까지 참여한 곡은 장르를 나눠 컴필레이션 앨범을 제작해도 될 만큼 방대하다. 최근에는 뮤지컬 ‘We Will Rock You'에 출연했던 케리 엘리스(Kerry Ellis)의 앨범 프로듀서 겸 연주자로 모습을 드러냈다. 

  콜래보레이션은 에디 반 헤일런(Eddie Van Halen) 등 여러 친구들과 함께 스타 플릿 프로젝트(Star Fleet Project)를 결성한 1983년부터 본격적으로 시작되었다. 그 무렵 프레디 머큐리(Freddie Mercury)와 로저 테일러(Roger Taylor)는 솔로 앨범을 준비했고, 브라이언은 제프리 오스본(Jeffrey Osborne), 빌리 스콰이어(Billy Squier), 크리스 톰슨(Chris Thompson) 앨범에 게스트로 참여했다. 

 

  1986년부터 시작한 프로듀서 활동은 새로운 도전이었다. 일본 아이돌 가수 미나코 혼다(Minako Honda)의 앨범과 싱글, 퀸의 <Bohemian Rhapsody>를 리메이크하며 주목받은 밴드 배드 뉴스(Bad News)의 데뷔 앨범, 스코틀랜드 밴드 헤비 페틴(Heavy Pettin), 2000년 브라이언의 배우자가 된 가수 겸 연기자 아니타 돕슨(Anita Dobson)까지 다양한 앨범의 프로듀싱을 맡았다. 가장 큰 성공은 영국 코미디 듀오 헤일 앤 페이스(Hale And Pace)의 자선 싱글 <The Stonk>로 1991년 영국 차트 1위에 올랐다. 

  블랙 사바스(Black Sabbath)와의 인연은 1989년 「Headless Cross」에 수록된 <When Death Calls>에 참여하면서 시작됐다. 이후 브라이언은 토니 마틴(Tony Martin), 토니 아이오미(Tony Iommi) 솔로 앨범에도 참여하며 우정을 과시했다. 폴 로저스(Paul Rodgers)와의 첫 스튜디오 작업은 1993년 「Muddy Water Blues: A Tribute To Muddy Waters」에 수록된 <I'm Ready>에 참여하면서부터다. 브라질 록 밴드 파랄라마스(Paralamas)가 1994년 발표한 「Severino」에 수록된 <El Vampiro Bajo El Sol>에서 기타를 연주한 것, 국제 환경보호 단체 그린피스(Greenpeace)의 컴필레이션 「Alternative NRG」에 수록된 <New Damage>를 사운드가든(Soundgarden)과 함께한 것도 흥미로운 기록이다. 브라이언이 참여한 <Raining In My Heart>가 수록된 스테튜스 큐오(Status Quo)의 앨범 「Don't Stop」은 1996년 영국 차트 2위에 오르며 플래티넘을 기록했다. 

 

  2000년대에도 브라이언의 활동은 이어졌다. 푸 파이터스(Foo Fighters)와 함께한 핑크 플로이드(Pink Floyd) 커버곡 <Have A Cigar>는 ‘미션 임파서블 2’ 사운드트랙에, 브라이언 특유의 섬세하고 아름다운 연주를 만날 수 있는 곡으로 지미 지네코(Jimmy Gnecco)와 작업한 <Someone To Die For>는 ‘스파이더맨 2’ 사운드트랙에 수록되었다. 설명이 필요 없는 로비 윌리엄스(Robbie Williams), 이탈리아를 대표하는 보컬리스트 주케로(Zucchero)와도 작업한 브라이언은 2012년 영국 힙합 그룹 엔더브즈(N-Dubz)의 멤버 대피(Dappy)의 솔로 앨범 「Bad Intentions」에 수록된 <Rockstar>에서 기타를 연주했다. 이 곡은 영국 차트 2위를 기록했다. 2013년 MTV와의 인터뷰에서는 한국 가수 싸이(Psy)와 함께 작업하기로 했다고 밝혀 화제가 되기도 했다.

Eddie Howell <Man From Manhattan> from 「Man From Manhattan」(1975)
클럽에서 우연히 본 에디 하웰이 마음에 들었던 프레디 머큐리는 협력을 제안했고, 마침 새 싱글 작업이 필요했던 에디는 그 제안을 받아들였다. 둘은 의견을 교환하며 녹음을 시작했고, 기타를 맡았던 브라이언이 데모를 만들었다. 프레디는 그 데모를 바탕으로 피아노 연주와 코러스를 입혔다. 브라이언의 연주가 돋보이는 이 곡은 뛰어난 구성력을 자랑하지만 크게 히트하지 못했다. 그래도 퀸 팬들 사이에서는 많이 알려진 곡이 되었다. 발렌시아는 2003년 발표한 퀸 트리뷰트 앨범에 이 곡을 포함시켰다.

 

Meat Loaf <Bad For Good> from 「Bat Out Of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose」(2006)
1987년 스페셜올림픽 테마송 <A Time For Heroes>를 함께 작업했던 미트 로프와 오랜만에 만났다. <Bad For Good>은 미트 로프 특유의 드라마틱한 보컬과 브라이언의 화려한 연주가 어우러진 멋진 곡이다. 프로듀서 데스몬드 차일드는 브라이언과의 작업을 가장 기억에 남는 경험으로 손꼽았다. 이후 브라이언은 미트 로프의 후속 앨범 「Hang Cool Teddy Bear」(2010)에도 참여하게 된다.

퀸의 <We Will Rock You> 리듬을 샘플링한 레이디 가가의 록 발라드로 브라이언이 기타를 연주했다. 빌보드 싱글 차트 6위에 오른 이 곡은 음악적으로 좋은 평가를 받았고, 54회 그래미 어워드 ‘베스트 팝 솔로 퍼포먼스’ 부문에 노미네이트되었다. 레이디 가가는 <You And I>가 아주 중요한 의미를 가진 곡이라고 밝히기도 했다.
